Volkswagen is still recovering from the diesel scandal that has tarnished its “green” credibility, but the automaker hopes to move past its woes with a new range of electric cars that set to hit the streets in 2020. VW has just previewed one of those first electric cars with the debut of the new I.D. electric concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and it has a longer range and lower price tag than its direct competiors.

About the same size as the current Golf, the I.D. will be the first of VW’s new electric cars. Based on the automaker’s new dedicated electric platform, called MEB, the I.D. concept features a 167-hp electric motor and a driving range between 250 and 373 miles on a single charge. Thanks to DC fast-charging it should also only take around 15 minutes to recharge the battery up to 80 percent. It should cost under 30k, which is less than the Tesla 3.

VW has committed to releasing around 30 electric cars by 2025, with at least five of these planned for the VW brand. This includes the production version of the I.D. concept, a sedan, sports car, SUV and a production version of the Budd-e concept that we saw earlier this year. VW also plans to integrate fully automated driving technology in its new electric cars, which will arrive by 2025. Lastly VW has set a lofty goal of selling 1 million electric cars a year by 2025.
